CJD Rebrand

The Communication Arts and Broadcast Journalism is DLSU-Dasmarinas' dedicated department providing foundation learning in advertising, public relations, and media production.

Role: Brand Designer
Date: March 2018

Brief

DLSU-D’s Communication and Journalism Department (CJD) is dedicated to exploring mass communication theories, principles, and the role of media in shaping society while championing advocacy development. The department provides a solid foundation for careers in advertising, public relations, and media production. As a proud alumnus, it was a true honor to be entrusted with rebranding their assets.

Initially, I was tasked with redesigning the logo for their radio station, GreenFM. However, upon realizing that the department’s branding had not been updated—even after its name change—I took the initiative to revamp the entire umbrella brand, giving it a cohesive and refreshed identity.

Brand Audit

The Communication and Journalism Department (CJD) is committed to teaching students with a comprehensive understanding of various media platforms, including print, film, radio, photography, and television. Central to its mission is highlighting the critical role of journalism in today's fast-evolving world, where accurate, timely, and ethical reporting is more essential than ever. The program emphasizes that journalism should not be confined to traditional boundaries, encouraging students to explore innovative approaches and embrace the dynamic nature of the field. In the discovery phase, we played with words that would relate to the departments values and goals.

Given the department's core programs of Communication Arts and Broadcast Journalism, two key words emerged that reflect these programs: "magsalita" (to speak) associated with communication and "magbalita" (to inform) associated with journalism. Connecting these elements to their respective courses, Baybayin scripts were creatively presented in shapes that align with their objectives.

Brand Values

The logo combines two Filipino elements: Baybayin and Sarimanok. Baybayin, derived from "baybáy," means"spell" and is an indigenous script used by the Tagalog, resembling a syllabary. Sarimanok, from "sari" (cloth) and"manòk" (chicken), is a Maranao mythological figure symbolizing bravery and nobility.

Rebrand

This ideas represent an exciting leap into the future of media, blending traditional journalistic principles with the power of digital storytelling, traditional media, and emerging technologies. The department nurtures a generation of journalists prepared to navigate and shape the complex media landscape, contributing meaningfully to society through impactful and forward-thinking reporting.

Learnings

Since I pitched this to the stakeholders and department heads, unfortunately they decided settle on the GreenFM Logo. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the process of doing this. Cheers!
